We thought a lot about who we wanted to help shape the first African Sugar Summit. That’s why we invited not only the old favourites but also newer faces in the industry who, together, will help you understand the new stories, agendas and innovations happening all around us.

José Orive | International Sugar Organisation

José Orive is currently the Executive Director of the International Sugar Organization, a post he assumed in January 2014. Previously he was the Executive Director of the Central American Sugar Association (AICA) for 19 years where he was responsible for negotiations for the private sugar industry, with emphasis on coordination of joint actions on priority issues, a clearinghouse for information relevant to the sector, publications, and participation in international forae.

Since 2010 he also was a partner in ARTLEX law firm in charge of large corporate clients, distribution contracts and environmental issues and arbitration. He has also held senior posts in other law firms in Guatemala.

Soon after graduating from Georgetown University Law Centre in Washington in 1985, José took up the post of Minister Counselor for Economic & Commercial Affairs, Embassy of Guatemala, Washington, D.C

H.E. Wamkele Mene | African Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA)

H.E. Wamkele Mene was elected as the first Secretary General of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) on 10 February 2020 by the 33rd Assembly of the African Heads of State. H.E. Mene is a multilateral trade and development professional with almost two decades of experience in the implementation of the Southern African Customs Union (SACU) Agreemeent, the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Protocol on Trade, and World Trade Organization (WTO) Agreements. He has a vast experience of effectively engaging at the highest political level of government in Africa, providing counsel on trade policy, trade negotiations and strategy. He was a seasoned leader of the South African government trade negotiating machinery with vast experience in high level diplomatic representation and ability to influence for results at the most enior political and private sector levels.

Lusubilo Chakaniza | Ethanol Company Ltd. (EthCo), Malawi

Lusubilo is the Chief Executive Officer of Ethanol Company Limited (EthCo). She has over 17 years production management experience, 10 of which was has been spent in leadership roles. Prior to joining EthCo, Lusubilo spent 5 years in the academia working as a Physics and Energy Lecturer at the University of Malawi, the Polytechnic.

She holds a BSc Degree in Physics from the University of Malawi, Chancellor College and an MSc in Renewable Energy and Architecture from the University of Nottingham, UK;

Nick Jackson | Royal Swaziland Sugar Corp.

Nick Jackson has been the Managing Director at the Royal Swaziland Sugar Corporation since early 2009. He has had a long career in sugar, starting as a shift manager at the Tate & Lyle, Thames Refinery in London back in the late eighties. He has moved around the world with Tate & Lyle, first going to Scotland with Tate & Lyle Process Technology, Australia with Bundaberg Sugar and finally on to the United Sugar Company in Saudi Arabia as General Manager, Manufacturing. In 2004 he joined Booker Tate and spent a short time as a consultant before being posted to the Guyana Sugar Corporation in the Caribbean, where he was the CEO from 2005-2009. He has an honours degree in Biochemistry from the University of Lancaster as well as a wife, Vanessa, and son and daughter aged 14 and 11 respectively.

Mulhim Eltayeb | KEPM Projects/African Sugar Development Task Force

Mr. Eltayeb has more than 30 years of experience in strategic and operational management, project initialization, assessment and delivery worldwide. For 10 years, 2007 – 2017, he was the General Manager of the Kenana Engineering & Technical Services, expanding its business in many countries in East and West Africa in engineering and project delivery consulting services in the agribusiness, focused on sugarcane industry.  During his tenure, he supported various African governments in developing their strategic and long-term plans in sugar industry in Sudan, Ethiopia, Kenya, Nigeria, and Mauritania.

Currently, he runs his own consulting firm KEPM Projects, providing consulting services in the sugarcane industry for various companies in Africa and the Gulf Area. He is the co-founder of the Africa Sugar Development Taskforce initiative and interim Executive Director.    

He is a PMP, with master’s degree from Washington State University in civil and environmental engineering and a post-graduate degree in agribusiness.

Guillaume Gérout | African Trade Policy Advisor

Guillaume Gérout is a trade policy consultant. He has consulted on various trade policy and law issues with a focus on Africa, including intra-African trade and African trade with the rest of the world. He has notably collaborated with some international organizations such as the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA), International Organization of la Francophonie (OIF) and Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA), as well as the government of the Republic of Seychelles. He holds a Master’s degree from the Faculty of Economy and Law of the the University of la Reunion and a Bachelor’s degree from the Institute of European Studies from the University Paris III – Sorbonne-Nouvelle.   

Nick Kwolek | Kwolco

Nick Kwolek is the founder of Kwolco, an agri trade consultancy and research business founded in Nairobi, Kenya in 2018 when  he decided to leave the sugar trade after 13 years to set up his own business catering to the medium and large-scale commodities trade houses, international agencies, banks and Agricultural producers in East and Southern Africa.

Nick is very passionate about the African continent and sees the massive current and future potential that it has. He has had the huge fortune to travel to almost all of the countries in East and Southern Africa and has a good understanding of how the sugar trade works on that side of the continent. Nick, when not in the office, can usually be found roaming the plains of Africa with his family, in his trusty Landrover Defender.

Dr. Rozen Kone | PhD Business Administration

Dr Rozen Kone holds a Doctorate in Business Administration from the Business Science Institute in Luxembourg and the IAE Lyon Business School in France as well as an MBA in Banking-Finance from CESAG Business School in Dakar-Senegal (among the Top MBA in Banking-Finance in Africa) and has the title of Engineer-Master MIAGE (IT Methods Applied to Management and Management) from the Nangui-Abrogoua University of Abidjan-Ivory Coast.

His professional experience extends across several fields of finance including investment banking, asset management, agricultural grants, commercial banking, project development. Currently he is involved in strategic projects around several African countries including commodities exchanges, mining exchanges, and mass SMEs financing.

Duncan Keill| African FX Partners

After graduating from university and then Sandhurst, Duncan served with the British Army for four years, attaining the rank of Captain. He then worked in the City as a derivatives broker before moving to Switzerland where he spent 20 years in financial risk management and then investment fund management. Duncan has since worked extensively in Africa and lived in South Africa for several years. He has a good understanding of the opportunities and the pitfalls of the African markets and the intricacies of financial structuring in this environment. Duncan and his team have been able to raise various types of hard and soft funding for a variety of entities  and projects in agriculture and energy as well as provide consultancy on structuring and risk management.

Devesh Dukhira | Mauritius Sugar Syndicate

Devesh Dukhira is the CEO of the Mauritius Sugar Syndicate (MSS), which is responsible for the sales of all sugars produced in Mauritius. This is a producer-driven organization, comprising both growers and millers as members, and its objective is the maximization of their sales revenue.

With a first degree in Electronic Engineering from Bristol University in UK and a Masters’ Degree in Management from Boston University in the US, Devesh joined the MSS in 2001 and has been responsible for the marketing of its sugars until 2015 when he acceded to the post of CEO. Prior to that, he worked in an investment and trade promotion organization for a period of 9 years, both in Mauritius and in the UK.

Patience Alifo Dzigbordi | Greenfuel Innovation Africa

Patience Alifo Dzigbordi is the founder of Greenfel Innovation Africa and a representative of the Africa Circular Economy Network (AECN) in Ghana. She has contributed to the work of the circular economy in Ghana by establishing a renewable energy company which uses sugarcane bagasse for clean, smokeless energy for cooking. Currently, she is partnering with Development Institute, an NGO based in Ghana, adding value to the sugar industry locally and also promoting a circular economy in the sugar industry.

Maria Afonso | Rabobank

Maria Afonso is part of the RaboResearch Food & Agribusiness department within Rabobank. Based in Utrecht, the Netherlands, Maria conducts research and analysis on sugar, sweeteners, ethanol, and malt industries with a focus on the European market.

Prior to joining Rabobank, Maria has worked with market analysis and strategy for agribusiness firms such as American Sugar Refining (ASR-Group), Bunge North America, Mitsui Bussan Commodities, among others. She has worked with various agricultural commodities throughout her career and acquired integrated knowledge across different sectors of the agribusiness industry, including livestock, animal feed, grains, oilseeds, and sugar.

Maria has a Master of Agribusiness degree from Texas A&M University in the US and a Veterinary Medicine degree from São Paulo State University (UNESP) in Brazil.

Fabio Meneghin | Agroconsult

 

Fabio Meneghin is an agricultural engineer with post graduate studies in agribusiness management. Since 2003 he has served as an analyst at Agroconsult based in Florinopolis, Brazil in grains and the sugar/biofuels sector, preparing market analysis, anticipating the trends, and working as a consultant for many projects and evaluations.

Meghan Sapp | Sugaronline

Meghan Sapp is Executive Director and Head of Content of Sugaronline where she leads the team to bring the global sugar industry the most important news, prices and unique insight in order to help make the best decisions in a tight sugar market. She has been in charge of Sugaronline’s content for 15 years and has served as Managing Director since June 2018.

She is passionate about sustainable agricultural value chains, particularly sugar and other feedstocks for bioenergy and bioproducts.
